Stucco systems styrofoam to traditional
Stucco systems styrofoam to traditional.
Different stucco systems.
Traditional to synthetic stucco polystyrene boards.
EIFS was developed in Europe following WWII and applied to masonry walls of older buildings to restore appearance and improve thermal performance with its continuous insulation.
The U.S. began using EIFS in the early 1970s and adapted it for wood-and steel-framed walls with wood or paper-faced gypsum sheathing. The company I worked for back in the 1980’s was a large Plastering construction company, a union shop.
That company was versatile, they specialized in everything. Regarding different stucco systems as in large commercial buildings such as Kaiser's hospitals who’s architects or engineers specked out the Dry-Vit installation system.
This was my introduction to the foam board system, which is commonly referred to today as Efis and by many other names.
The traditional method first brought from the UK was to attach (Panzer fiberglass mesh). Because the lower sections of any and all buildings are prone to damage in high-traffic areas, this heavy fiberglass mesh netting was so tough it was named after the German tank, the Panzer tank.
Or often, more modern ways with leading stucco manufacturers would be included.
The STO Stucco System metal lath (“stucco netting”) is attached to a layer of expanded polystyrene foam board indented with grooves or what are known as keys. As added support for the stucco, the wire and a layer of stucco raging form a quarter-inch to a half-inch.
Almost all stucco systems require the use of two layers of grade “D” building paper attached to the wood sheathing.
Then, apply stucco in a one or two-coat system.
Today, the choice of stucco is endless, from fiber-reinforced base coat to one texture finish coat.
Or a Layer of Poly-Bond adhesive cement, ranging from an eighth to a quarter of an inch, by La Habra. Poly -bond is also used for attaching styrofoam to cementitious base coats.
For example, attaching often heavily coated Styrofoam molds around windows and doors or at the tops of buildings that will be exposed to high temperatures of heat in the summer or in winter, heavy freezing rains or snow and wind requires a powerful adhesive, otherwise severe weather can occur. It may loosen the foam, resulting in falling on someone.
Yes, I have heard of foam not properly hung and falling during such storms.
Dry-fit EIFS (Exterior Insulation Finishing Systems (EIFS), sometimes referred to as synthetic stucco, is a type of cladding that provides wall exteriors with an insulated finished surface. It is designed to last for a building's typical design life.
Naturally, the actual longevity of any specific building will depend mainly on the building maintenance program. The words mentioned above are the tip of the iceberg for such systems; thus, research what you desire.
Lastly, keep in mind that what we are doing in this video is for a retired architect who has extensive knowledge in too many fields to mention here.
Folks, for immediate bids, send pictures to me or Jason.

A fun fact for me is that our family and I have unconsciously created and contributed the most comprehensive encyclopedia of Stucco and Plastering videos ever produced online globally for your inspiration, entertainment, and education.
We show our work because we are honest, confident, and transparent. We have nothing to hide; we know what we are doing. If I had to say where we were schooled, it's closest to, say, the University of Morals, which means if it's not done right, you go back for free and do it again, but this time correctly.
Thus, all can depend on us for sound advice and workmanship.

I've worked in the trades for decades and still find these videos useful. There is always something new to learn, even if it's a nuance on something you thought you already knew. However, what I have found frustrating is that Kirk repeatedly tells of his preference for his particular type of trowel yet never calls it by its proper name. Frequently he refers to it as a "Congo trowel" (cute, but no such animal), and once I heard him refer to it as a "swim trowel" as opposed to a "swimming pool trowel". I've used a pool trowel for years for drywall and plaster repair but have been somewhat dissatisfied because it has more flexibility than I want. For swimming pools this is great but not ideal for my use. Countless searches for the type of trowel Kirk uses have been fruitless because without a specific trade name search algorithms default to either square edge, full radius, or combination hybrid trowel types. Today I finally figured out what Kirk's trowel is called. A "silo trowel". This old dog is looking forward to learning what I think about it first hand.

I noticed you took the stucco right down do the deck. I have a similar situation and am wondering what you do to create a gap between the deck boards and the stucco. I am worried that the deck boards will expand and contract and crack the stucco if I don't leave a gap.

I know his insulations detail, and mentioned it in detail, what area are you interested in? It’s capable to the Dry-Vit system, except instead of Panzer fiberglass mesh with a quarter inch of Poly-bond adhesive cement with a color finish, metal stucco netting was used an and inch of strong stucco was applied. I informed my sons it was the Dry-Vit systems on steroids. There are other difference in the framing construction also which are over the top such as 4 by 4 on all the vertical corners and the bottoms, that the average person would not spend the time or the dough to do, but he did. It’s designed to withstand a nuclear war. Where just cockroaches and this addition will be left.

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering 2 години тому

Good morning Andy, there are several ways to attach corners, you can attach with a gun or nails, then use the cement to hold them there permanently. Or one can use tie wire as we do for steel framing, and once more use the cement to secure them. Option 3 which I have done only when necessary use rods to simply build them with no corners. I have several videos where we did just this. On this home there were only a couple corners that did not have the 4 by 4 wood beans. I mentioned it as this added a challenge to our task. Our cement work will be avaible next Friday. Cheers.😉

Hi Kirk, that foam system is a good system, I did a lot of western one coat system in Northern California and we did what we call pinning corners to the foam with nails. The nails did not go all the way to the wood substrate and the system worked great. Great defense against heat and sound , you can crank your music and not bother your neighbors! Glad your wrist has healed and you’re ok, or we would not be able to watch your videos. One other thing is the black frame windows , we need to come up with a better system of covering the black anodized material. I think the manufacturer should leave a plastic cover over the metal and the cover should be able to stay applied through window installation and through stucco application. Then can be removed at completion of our process. Hope a window manufacturer reads this and follows through. Always dig your content, thank you.

I have not witnessed this in my time, however in these odd times where garages in Oakland sell for close to a million, it appears to me there’s some serious manipulations that may be forcing those with little knowledge to compromise their mortals and ethics to keep food on the table. This is sad, but I understand, I think. 🤔

Howdy Greenman, the differences are interesting, the architect fella used the best of both worlds and combined them into one. He thinks outside the box. Admirable. Too many folks worry about public opinion which detours true genius. 😉

Charles, footy to hear this. Sounds like my brother Luuuu, he was on his bike a few years back a lady hit him ran over his foot, stopped the car help put his groceries back in the bag, said sooo sorry. Then left him there to die, he should be on disability, instead as he’s barely able to walk well now after three surgeries. He just mixes most days and my sons do the walking as in the video coming up next Friday, this house is a football field away from any parking, that’s 300 feet of optical course. Thanks for the comment.
